Many online sources say that shaving doesn't stimulate hair growth, but I have friends who say it does. Thoughts? How many people have experienced increased facial hair from shaving? Mainly facial hair.?
not meHow many people have experienced increased facial hair from shaving? Mainly facial hair.?
Growth isn't stimulated, but hair grows back straighter which makes it look darker as if there was more hair growth.
any shaving should increase hair growth.. i dunno but my brothers unibrow got thicker thru shaving so...
It does not increase hair growth. It may seem to make the hair thicker, because instead of the hair tip being pointed, it will be cut straight.
Myth that cutting off dead tissue- hair-- will cause it to grow faster. No logical reason it would, a sharp blade doesn't stimulate the hair follicle as much as just rubbing your face. The myth probably arises, and many still believe it, because, well- they shave off some stray whiskers, and next week go to shave them again, and lo and behold, they have more! So surely shaving caused more hair to grow! Of course, had they not shaved in the first place, the additional hairs would have shown up anyway-- the beard was coming in, and it comes in over time.
A simple way to test the myth is to shave an area that doesn't normally grow hair, like the upper cheeks- shave it daily if you want and you'll never see any hair appear. Razors are not magic wands, just sharp blades cutting off dead stuff. All visible hair is dead, only alive at the base.
When you first shave an area, you cut off all of the thin, tapered hair ends, which aren't seen as easily. Once these thin ends are cut off, they are replaced by hairs of the full thickness. So it seems like the facial hair inceases, when in fact it just is more noticable.
This is just perception, not reality.
The reason is that the blunt ends of shaved hairs reflect light more than the pointy hairs when not shaven for awhile.
Another reason for the misperception is that young guys starting to grow facial hair sometimes naturally gain a lot quickly. It would have been the same if they hadn't shaved, but it seems to them as if the shaving caused it to grow faster.
Facial hair is dead, so it doesn't know it has been cut. The only plausible reason is that somehow stimulating the skin causes a little increase in blood flow, but countless guys that actually pay attention to this on the Beard Board state it doesn't make any different.
I'd love to see a developing teen try shaving one side of his face for 6 months and leave the other to grow. Then trim both down to stubble and let it grow. If the shaved side is fuller and grows faster, then it could be proven to some degree for at least one guy.
Shaving makes the hair grow quicker and thicker. You didn't list your source but I don't need it since I shave and know first hand that it does.
I always thought when you shaved your hair grew back more full and thick
When first going through puberty I would shave and it was like it became more coarse everytime, and also I would notice new hairs coming in. But since puberty ended nothing new.
