Can dogs read human facial expressions?

If you smile at a dog will they react acordingly? Will it smile and wag its tail? If you frown at one, does it acknowledge that you must be angry? Can dogs read human facial expressions?
They can read facial expressions.. You know this because they don't like it when people wear sun glasses, they can't read their eyes and see what they are thinking. They won't necessarily smile, but they will wag their tail .. depending on the expression you give, they will act accordingly. Can dogs read human facial expressions?
The dog (or cat or child) can sense your emotions through the scent you give off (pheromones). Sound (your tone) and scent are the first triggers, then appearance.

So yes, they can read your facial expression, but are more reactive towards your emotional state and will know it before you step in the room:

-if you're happy, they'll respond in a happy manner

-if you're fighting with someone, they may get stressed

-if you're angry--at them or someone/thing else--they'll either cower shamefully or respond aggressively, depending on training

-if you're sad, they'll come by to take care of you

-if you're scared, they'll either be just as scared or in protection mode

-if you're lying, ie saying ';bad dog'; in a cutesy manner, they think you're playing with them; likewise barking ';good dog'; angrily will frighten them because they'll think they were misbehaving

Obviously, training and breeding also have something to do with the temperment and reactivity of the dog
They react to everything about a person. But smiling with teeth showing is taken by many dogs as a threat (smiling with mouth closed is fine). Also, know that you cannot fool a dog - if you smile but your eyes are hard or there is muscle tension in your face/body, they will read that as well and they will not be fooled by the smile. And they will respond depending on their level of socialization and their basic temperament (so, not all dogs will respond the same way to your smile or frown).
yeah like the others sed, its not so much reading ur facial expressions, that's a human thing, but voice, body language, the wasy u talk and approach them, how u are reacting to other people in the room and them. since neither of us can really understand what the other is trying to say we have both developed different ways of reading and sensing what the other means. after all you dont try and understand them by their facial expressions do u? (and if yes then ur in trouble)
They can read a little bit maybe. But dogs themselves don't use a ton of face language. Instead, they read our body motions and tone of voice. But even if you smile, you're giving off more signals that your happy other then just smiling. So dogs can pick up on that.
Well, dogs are unique in the animal kingdom in that there is no other animal that studies humans as much as they do. A dog will always be looking at your eyes. Always. Dogs have evolved to watch people and they can detect a lot from our eyes and faces.
Dogs will react more to a human's body language.
